New Penn Station Five Months Ahead of Schedule

Work on the future Pennsylvania Station complex is already five months ahead of schedule. Workers at the old James A. Farley Post Office at 421 Eighth Ave. in Midtown Manhattan have finished tearing out the old sorting room floor, breaking up 6,000 tons of concrete and removing hundreds of tons of steel and hazardous materials.

That clears the way to start full construction on a new 255,000-square-foot train hall inside the old Post Office, including 9 platforms, 17 tracks, a one-acre skylight and another 700,000 square feet for mixed-use development. The train hall will increase total concourse floor space in the Pennsylvania Station-Farley Complex by more than 50%.

“With better access to trains and subways, vibrant retail and business opportunities and stunning architectural design, we are bringing Penn Station into the 21st century,” said Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The Farley Post Office was designed by McKim, Mead and White, the same architects who designed the original Penn Station demolished five decades ago, which has been mourned ever since. The new $1.6 billion station is targeted to open by the end of 2020.
