New Life for Famed Midtown Recording Studio
One of the most famous recording studios in New York City has been acquired by Berklee College of Music. Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and the cast of Hamilton have all recorded at Avatar Studios, which originally opened as the Power Station in a 33,000-square-foot, former Consolidated Edison power plant at 441 W. 53rd St. in Midtown Manhattan.
The studio will continue to operate commercially as the Power Station at BerkleeNYC — in addition to offering educational and music programs.
“The idea kept coming back to me and I thought, why not? I have the ability to give back, and it might be fun to help create a community,” said Berklee trustee Pete Muller to the New York Times. Muller worked with the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment and the New York City Economic Development Corporation to raise $25 million for the project — enough to launch, renovate and operate for a decade.
