New Braunfels Utilities Ponders Future of its Office Buildings

New Braunfels Utilities (NBU), which provides electricity, water and sewer services to residents in Comal County (north of San Antonio), will relocate from its current headquarters at 263 Main Plaza in approximately three years. But city leadership is already trying to figure out the best use for the 25,832-square foot, three-building complex it currently occupies.

To preserve historic elements of the property, NBU’s proposed plan will limit what the buildings can be used for, and how they can be altered through use of an overlay zoning district. Restrictions also exist on the materials that can be used with any adaptive reuses project.

NBU will meet with the Planning Commission Board, the Historic Landmark Commission and the Downtown Development Board this month, and a more structured plan will go before city council in March 2019 for approval and a final vote.
