New Astrodome vision revealed

New Astrodome Vision Revealed

When it was built in 1964, the Houston Astrodome was called the 8th Wonder of the World. Time and technology rendered the sports venue obsolete, and it has been shuttered since 2008. The Astrodome Conservancy has been tasked with finding a new role for the iconic, 18-story-high arena, and a new vision has been brought forth.

The new plans, which include restaurants, retail, office and commercial space, a new event floor, and a mixed-used district, are part of a new vision for the redevelopment of the vacant Astrodome stadium.

The new redevelopment design creates 450,000 square feet of revenue-generating space and four state-of-the-art buildings inside the stadium. Additional elements of the design include a mixed-use district surrounding NRG Park.

San Francisco-based architecture firm Gensler created the designs.

The redevelopment of the Astrodome would likely cost $1 billion and be funded through a public-private partnership. However, no funding source has yet been identified.
