Navy Yard’s Clare Newman to Lead Governor’s Island Trust

Clare Newman, the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation’s chief of staff, has been nominated to serve as president and CEO of the Trust for Governors Island. She will direct and manage all of Governors Island’s activities and operations, and support its development as a destination for recreation, innovation and culture.

“Governors Island is the jewel of New York Harbor, and Clare is the perfect person to unlock its potential,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “With her programming and planning experience, Clare will implement innovative projects to attract more New Yorkers to the island year-round.”

Before coming to the Navy Yard, Newman was a senior member of Bloomberg Philanthropies’ innovation management team. Prior to that, she was a VP with the New York City Economic Development Corporation’s real estate division.

Newman’s nomination will come up for a vote by the Trust’s board of directors at its June 19 meeting.
