Navy Pier Flyover Completion Delayed, Now Targeted for 2020

Completion of the Navy Pier Flyover has been pushed back to late spring of 2020, according to the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT). The delay is due to the need to complete repairs to the Lake Shore Drive bridge before the project’s final component, a new platform on the bridge’s east side, is added.

While the work is being completed, pedestrians and cyclists will use a lane of the Lower Lake Shore Drive bridge that’s normally used by cars. Concrete barriers will be put in place to separate people from cars, according to CDOT.

The project, begun in 2014, was originally slated for completion in 2018. Completion was then pushed back to the middle of this year, and then the end of 2019.

The Flyover has been criticized for taking longer to complete than either Willis Tower or the Golden Gate Bridge. Both projects were finished in four years.

Connect Chicago Fall 2019 will take place Oct. 29 in Chicago. For more information, or to register, click here.
