N. Arizona tribe to build hotel showing off customs and artistry

Native American-Themed Resort to Open in Flagstaff-Area Town

A Northern Arizona tribe is paying homage to its unique culture and the regions natural beauty by developing a 44-unit boutique hotel. The Taawaki Inn will be a two story resort in Clarkdale, Arizona, just above the Verde River at the entrance of the Tuzigoot National Monument. The Hopi Tribe Economic Development Corporation is funding the project. Wespac Construction Inc., Flagstaff, is building it. Smith Architects is the designer. The project is slated for completion in Q2 2024.

The 33,000 square foot Taawaki Inn will feature a culturally significant and educational component, as the hotel will reflect the Hopi culture. Hank Ahrens, the project’s interior designer, has curated an array of Hopi art for the building’s interiors and guest rooms all created by Hopi artists. The first of its kind in the area, the Taawaki Inn will offer traditional Hopi cultural activities mixed in with modern amenities such as a fitness center, meeting and conference rooms, a gift shop, and art gallery.
