Tempe's Moxy to become ASU Student Housing

Nation’s First Moxy Could Become Student Housing

Tempe’s planning agency will consider a proposal that would allow investors to convert the Moxy Phoenix Tempe/ASU into student housing. Vale Student Housing hopes to change the hotel, the nation’s first under the Moxy brand, into a 277-unit student housing project comprised of 1-4 bedroom units. If approved, the project would replace the existing hotel. The Phoenix Business Journal reports the 186-key Moxy by Marriott International Inc. opened in 2016 at 1333 S. Rural Road with an aim to attract millennials and business travelers.

While the hotel is only eight years old, the structure was constructed in the 1970s and was previously home to Four Points by Sheraton hotel.

East Coast real estate firm Gilbane Development Co. is the developer of Vale Student Housing. The firm works on projects in affordable housing, health care, mixed-use, government, student housing and more.

Phoenix-based architecture firm Todd & Associates has drawn up plans for the project.
