MXU Coming to Downtown Escondido Hospital Site?
A mixed-use project is in the works to replace Palomar Health’s aging downtown Escondido, CA campus. The district selected the winning bid to acquire the property, and redevelop the site from a pool of four finalists, which will be announced next month.
Though the three-hospital district declined to reveal details of the developer or plan, it indicated potential uses could include housing, for sale or rental, as well as commercial uses. The Palomar Medical Center Downtown site is at 555 E. Valley Pkwy.
It was Palomar Health’s founding hospital and has been an Escondido landmark since it opened in February 1950. In 2015, the district announced it would close the hospital, and estimated that the facility was operating at a $20 million annual loss.
A new 11-story, 740,000-square-foot Palomar Health facility opened in 2012 on a 56-acre campus three miles away in Escondido.
