Mulling Over More Convention Center Space

In Corpus Christi, TX, size matters. Specifically, when it comes to the American Bank Center, the Gulf Coast city’s convention center at 1901 N. Shoreline Blvd.

The Corpus Christi City Council recently discussed a proposed, $75-million expansion, which would grow the exhibit hall by 40,000 square feet, add 12 meeting rooms and increase the lobby size. Also under discussion was an adjacent 300-room hotel.

The council was roused to action when the Texas Future Farmers of America organization said it would no longer come to Corpus Christi for the annual state meeting, due to space constraints at the venue. Though the convention center expansion wouldn’t keep the FFA event, Elvia Aguilar with the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau said a larger venue would allow the city to book “simultaneous smaller meetings.”

The city’s staff will continue exploring the convention center expansion and adjacent hotel.
