MTA’s Lhota: ‘Hold Us Accountable’ on Subway Overhaul
Metropolitan Transportation Authority chairman Joe Lhota charted the authority’s progress in addressing near-term and long-term issues with New York City’s subways. Among other improvements, major track incidents have dropped by 37% since last summer, Lhota told the Association for a Better New York.
However, he added, “I’m not going to be satisfied until the riders see it, feel it, understand it, so that the system is back to the system that all New Yorkers deserve.” He told the ABNY audience, “You’re going to have to hold us accountable. We know what we need to do.”
With 800-plus miles of track, New York’s subway system is the world’s most complex, Gov. Andrew Cuomo told ABNY. It faces the twin dilemmas of record ridership and long-deferred upkeep. Maintenance is “always the first thing to go in the budget,” said Cuomo. “And now the chickens are coming home to roost.”
