Mayor Eric Adams and Gov. Kathy Hochul released a plan to address public safety concerns and homelessness in New York City subways

MTA Will Add 500 Officers to Combat Fare Evasion

Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority have reached an agreement to add 500 additional uniformed officers to the city’s subway and bus systems. The deployment is intended to address the rising trend of fare evasion at subway turnstiles, along with the increased incidence of assault on transit workers.

As part of this plan, the New York County District Attorney will provide $40 million to fund associated costs of the personnel, and provide construction modifications and new video technology to target station locations.

“The safest big city in America deserves the safest subways in America,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “This partnership means more eyes and ears in stations, and more officers for New Yorkers to turn to when they need help. The additional officers we’re deploying to the subway system will protect riders, prevent fare evasion and respond in emergencies.”
