MTA Eyes 20-Year Timeline for Repairs Near Grand Central
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority will launch work next May on a project to repair rail infrastructure in and around Grand Central Terminal, the Wall Street Journal reported. The $2-billion project, which will entail street closures on Park Avenue and its cross streets, is expected to take 20 years.
The MTA plans to overhaul tunnels connected to Grand Central below Midtown East. The work will include reconstructing a 1.8-mile viaduct that runs on Park Avenue and a series of bridges supporting the thoroughfare’s side streets from East 45th to East 57th streets, according to the WSJ.
It’s not yet clear how much impact the construction will have on pedestrians, motorists and businesses in the area, and repairs will be conducted a few blocks at a time to minimize disruption.
However, the WSJ reported that the MTA will need to rip up streets and sidewalks along several office towers around Grand Central.
