MTA Accelerates Progress on $2B in Capital Projects
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is accelerating construction on $2 billion in capital projects amid reduced ridership caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday. Cuomo made the announcement as New York City began reopening.
Among the capital projects now underway are the rehabilitation of the F Train’s Rutgers Tube under the East River, and rehabilitation of the 138th Street Grand Concourse Station in the Bronx.
Cuomo said the MTA is continuing to take unprecedented steps to keep riders and workers safe, including cleaning and disinfecting trains and buses.
“New York City and the MTA are reopening, and today I took a ride on the 7 train because if the subway isn’t safe for me, then I wouldn’t ask anyone else to go on the subway,” Cuomo said.
That said, Cuomo reiterated that masks are still mandatory on subways and other public transportation.
