MountainStar Sports Group Awarded USL Team

The United Soccer League (USL) added El Paso, TX to its teams for the 2019 season. The new expansion franchise will be owned by MountainStar Sports Group (MSSG). The group also owns and operates the El Paso Chihuahuas, the San Antonio Padres’ baseball club’s Triple-A affiliate, as well as being a minority owner of FC Juarez Bravos in Mexico.

The as-yet unnamed team will play at Southwest University Park at 1 Ballpark Plaza, which is home to the Chihuahuas. The field will be converted to soccer use, as has been done for past exhibition games featuring the FC Juarez Bravos.

According to MSSG executives Josh Hunt and Alan Ledford, adding a soccer team will improve both quality of life and economic development in the CBD, by providing more family friendly entertainment to encourage people to travel downtown. In the meantime, MSSG is examining potential soccer stadium sites in and around the downtown area.
