More Than 50% of Gen-Z Hope to Work in Hospitality

The largest generation in the United States, Gen-Z, have their hopes set on working in the hospitality industry. A new study, commissioned by the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Foundation (AHLEF), shows that more than 50% of this demographic want to be part of the $590 billion industry.

Defined as those born from 1995 to 2010, Gen-Z is comprised of over 61 million individuals and is a highly diverse group, with over 20% being bilingual. So, what attracts them most to the hospitality industry?

Here are some standout facts from the survey:

  • Gender Gap Differences: Gen-Z women are twice as likely to value socially responsible companies more than men. The top traits that women prioritize in the workplace are confidence, team work and a good attitude.  On the other hand, men list technical skills first.
  • Industry Attraction: Dominating construction, food services, and finance, 52% of males and 53% of females want to work in hospitality.
  • Less Education, No Worries: According to respondents, 52.5% don’t believe education is of utmost importance for the job. Rather, confidence, attitude, ability to work on a team, and job-specific skills matter more.
  • Human Interaction: Managerial titles that allow for job growth are highly sought after, as well as jobs with human interaction such as bartending and desk representatives.

The survey was completed by 2,846 respondents via email and mobile phone from a national sample of 15 -30 year olds. Gen-Z includes those ages 15-23, and young millennials are those ages 24-30.
