More Room for Cats & Dogs: Harris County Prepares for New Shelter

Harris County is scheduled to begin construction today on a new $24 million, 48,000-square-foot animal shelter. The facility will be built on the same property as the existing shelter at 612 Canino Rd. in Houston.

The existing shelter, which opened in the mid-1980s, can hold 150 dogs and 100 cats, but is often forced to house close to 400 dogs and cats. Harris County Animal Shelter Director Michael White indicated that the new facility can hold 315 dogs and 210 cats.

In addition to more space, the new shelter will have a medical clinic, walking trail, isolation care unit and four dog parks. Construction is expected to last a year, with the new facility opening by the end of 2019.
