More Details Emerge on 30K-Acre Sandow Lakes Ranch

The future of acreage that is northeast of downtown Austin is starting to come into more focus. Sandow Lakes Ranch, once the site of smelting operations for Alcoa Corp. could change hands in a $250 million deal that might feature a high-tech, green-energy hub.

The 30,000-acre area, known as Sandow Lakes Ranch which is owned by Alcoa, has several multiple leases on the site already, according to Icon Global Group, which is marketing the property near Rockdale, TX. Icon’s Bernard Uechtritz confirmed to the Austin Business Journal that Bitmain Technologies Ltd. of China is already on board, and will take nearly one million square feet in what used to be an aluminum smelter.

Uechtritz indicated, however, that Bitmain wouldn’t be the biggest or most high-profile tenant to take space on the site. He said that Alcoa is in negotiations with solar companies, one which could take up to 6,000 acres.
