More Bad News for Bookstores
Books and gifts is the category of retail most heavily affected by e-commerce. Online transactions now account for 24.6% of the revenue in the books and gifts category.
“Restaurants and discount retailers are projected to retain the bulk of their sales in physical storefronts, while office supplies, books, and electronics are expected to shift almost entirely online,” according to “Bagged or Boxed: The Future of 13 Retail Categories,” a recent report from JLL.
The report studied the impact of e-commerce on retailers by analyzing consumer opinion data, store closure statistics, same-store sales growth, and e-commerce penetration, and concluded that different product categories will shift online at different rates and levels.
