Moldy Problem Forcing San Marcos CISD to Weigh Options

The San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District narrowed options for a new building, following a vote at a recent board of trustees meeting. The existing building at 501 S. LBJ Dr. was vacated in November 2017, after two quality air tests came back positive for mold. The companies performing the tests recommended to the San Marcos CISD board that remediation be performed as soon as possible.

The four options are

• Renovate the existing facility, cost: $2.5 million

• Renovate and expand the existing facility, cost: $8.9 million

• Demolish and build a new facility at the current site, cost: $9.4 million

• Renovate part of Mendez Elementary School, cost: $5.3 million

In the past 25 years, trustees have tried and failed four times to get a new administration building, either by a bond election or through district funds. Trustee Miguel Arredondo told Community Impact Newspaper he thinks voters would support a bond election for a new building.
