MIT Plans Massive Kendall Square MXU
Massachusetts Institute of Technology plans to redevelop the former Volpe Center site in Cambridge, MA’s Kendall Square as a mixed-use project with up to 1,400 apartments and condominiums, along with office, lab, and retail space. The 14-acre site was acquired by the university from the federal government for $750 million.
The vision is for a transportation research lab to anchor the development, as a replacement for a federal research facility. Once that project is built, MIT could move forward on rezoning for broader uses.
Though the product mix would lean toward office and lab space, housing is envisioned, as well as 3.5 acres of open community space and a “Main Street” of retail along Third and Broadway. The central grassy corridor and promenade, lined with stores, is envisioned to create a pedestrian-friendly component to the project, which could have a 500-foot tall residential tower.
