Midwestern Governors Pledge Joint Effort to Reopen Region’s Economy

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and his counterparts in Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Indiana and Kentucky said Thursday that they’ll work in close coordination to reopen the economy in the Midwest region.

In a joint statement, the governors said they’re doing all they can to slow the spread of COVID-19, “and we are eager to work together to mitigate the economic crisis this virus has caused in our region.”

The governors didn’t spell out a timetable for bringing their states’ economies up to speed, nor did they spell out any concrete steps they’ll be taking. They said that they’ll consider at least four factors in determining the timing:

• Sustained control of the rate of new infections and hospitalizations
• Enhanced ability to test and trace
• Sufficient health care capacity to handle resurgence
• Best practices for social distancing in the workplace
