Michigan Suburbs Thinking Like Developers

Troy, MI, along with Royal Oak, Northville, Warren, Commerce Township and other suburbs, are starting to reconsider what their areas would be like as urban cores. These suburban cities, and others, are examining municipal real estate holdings, and thinking about how they can create walkable, urban areas that would attract both millennials and baby boomers.

Troy has been working with Core Partners LLC and Gibbs Planning Group Inc. to develop a master plan for 127 acres. The site currently contains the city’s civic center, and the plan concerns the acreage around it, which would contain townhomes, condos, apartments and a hotel.

Meanwhile, Commerce Township has an eye toward bringing single-family homes, senior living and townhomes, along with 550,000 square feet of retail and office space to 340 acres.
