Michigan Central Station Has a Ford in Its Future

Ford Motor Company plans an announcement next week on its redevelopment plans for the 500,000-square-foot Michigan Central Station, vacant since the last train pulled out 30 years ago. The auto maker acquired the disused property from the Moroun family, which also owns the Ambassador Bridge, connecting Detroit to Windsor, Ontario.

“The next steward of the building is the right one for its future,” Matthew Moroun said at a ceremony announcing the sale. “The depot will become a shiny symbol of Detroit’s progress and its success.”

The Associated Press reported that Ford recently began moving about 200 members of its electric and autonomous vehicle business teams into a refurbished former factory near Michigan Central. Next week’s announcement, Ford said in a statement, will mark “a historic day for Detroit, the auto industry and the future of Ford.”
