Metro Phoenix Renters Facing Eviction Receive Reprieve

The Arizona Supreme Court gave Maricopa County Justice Courts authorization this week to suspend mandatory timelines on eviction hearings. Due to the coronavirus crisis, justices of the peace have been asked to delay eviction hearings.

That means renters facing evictions in Metro Phoenix may be able to stay in their homes until early April, at least. Court filings show nearly 2,000 Valley residents currently face losing their homes to eviction now.

Scott Davis, spokesman for the Maricopa Justice Courts, told AZ Central, “By law, eviction hearings are supposed to take place within five to 10 days of filing, but we are asking judges to continue or postpone cases because of the uncertainty with the coronavirus.”

The Arizona Multihousing Association asked rental housing owners and managers to work with residents who may be facing eviction as a result of COVID-19 related illness or reduced income to allow payment plans, accept partial payments, and waive late fees.
