Metra Receives $100M Fed Grant for New Railcars

Chicago’s commuter train operator is one of three organizations selected to receive funds under the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Rail Vehicle Replacement Program, part of $631 million in grants the U.S. Department of Transportation is awarding to upgrade fleets and support American manufacturing.

Chicago’s Commuter Rail Division of the Regional Transportation Authority (Metra) was awarded $100 million to help replace older railcars with newer ones. Metra will buy 50 modern, multi-level railcars that feature new passenger safety, accessibility, and amenities to replace aging railcars that have been in service for more than 40 years. Metra must also match the grant in local funds.

The process of updating the fleets with newer cars also promises new jobs. “These cars also represent hundreds of jobs in American factories, building the next generation of American transit,” said FTA Administrator Nuria Fernandez. Commuter operators in Baltimore and Philadelphia also received grants under the program.
