Metra Bridge Project in Irving Park Receives Federal Grant

Transit agency Metra will receive $17.8 million in federal funding to rebuild the 120-year-old rail bridge in the North Side’s Irving Park neighborhood. The Federal Railroad Administration grant will support the construction of a new grade-separated double-tracked rail bridge over Milwaukee Avenue immediately north of the Grayland Metra Station.

“This project is crucial for increasing reliability and performance for our customers along the Milwaukee District North Line,” said Metra CEO Jim Derwinski.

Amtrak, which runs its long-distance Hiawatha Service and Empire Builder trains up to 16 times per day over the bridge, supported Metra’s grant application, said Amtrak’s Ray Lang. “The Hiawathas are our busiest Amtrak Midwest route, with a record of more than 850,000 customers last year and on a pace to top that record this year, and this bridge is critical to their success and future growth,” he said.
