Meta Going All Green for Austin Data Center

One of the biggest constraints on developing data centers is the energy requirements needed to power the stacks of computers. Meta Platforms is all-in with renewable energy for its newest data center in downtown Austin. Construction on the solar project is set to begin later this year.

The Austin Business Journal reports the company and RWE, one of the largest renewable energy companies in the U.S., announced a new power purchase agreement that allows Meta to buy 100% of the output from RWE’s Waterloo Solar project, which is planned for Bastrop Country. RWE’s investment during the project’s construction phase is expected to produce an estimated $26 million in economic activity.

Meta has yet to occupy the nearly 600,000 square feet it leases in the Sixth and Guadalupe tower in downtown Austin (photo). It also leases space at 300 W. Sixth and Third + Shoal Tower, a few blocks away.

Meta is also building a hyperscale data center facility in Temple, originally pegged as a $800 million investment.
