Meruelo Approved to Take Over Las Vegas Strip’s SLS Hotel, Casino

Downey-based Meruelo Group received approval from the Nevada Gaming Commission to acquire the SLS Las Vegas Hotel & Casino. The 1,616-room property is being transferred from San Francisco-based Stockbridge Capital Group.

The three-tower resort-casino includes the W Las Vegas. The deal is expected to close this month.

The new owner envisions investing up to $100 million to revitalize the property, including upgrades to the rooms, pools, casino floor and entertainment venues. The hotel is branded with Los Angeles-based SBE Entertainment’s SLS hotel concept, and is home to such SBE dining concepts as sushi restaurant Katsuya and gourmet burger restaurant Umami Burger.

The former Sahara Hotel & Casino property was bought by SBE and Stockbridge for $400 million in 2007. Following a renovation, the hotel reopened in 2014 as the SLS Las Vegas. Subsequently, Stockbridge acquired SBE’s 10% stake, and pays licensing fees for the use of the SLS name.
