Merck Exploring New IT Hub at Dell Med

Merck & Co. is seeking to create a 90,000-square-foot technology hub in Austin, TX that would bring 600 jobs. The pharmaceutical giant is considering a location at Dell Medical School, as well as others within the Innovation District.

The company would invest nearly $29 million to develop and outfit its fourth global technology hub. The facility would focus on data collection and design of technology platforms for “personalized, proactive and preventative health care.”

Austin city officials envision the hub providing an economic boost to the Innovation District area, potentially spilling over into downtown, as well as attracting other innovative health companies to the area. An economic package is being lined up that could be worth up to $856,000.

Dell Med leaders note the collaborative relationship between Merck and the medical school is expected to “create unique opportunities to fulfill our mission in different and far-reaching ways,” said Dean Clay Johnston.
