Houston-based Memorial Hermann Health System and Dallas-based Baylor Scott & White Health have called off their massive merger, according to an internal memo sent to employees. The health systems announced their initial plans to merge in October 2018, and though terms weren’t disclosed, industry experts estimated the merger at more than $14 billion.
Had the deal gone through, it would’ve created the largest health system in the state of Texas. Together, the systems operate 68 hospital campuses, and more than 1,100 care-delivery sites with nearly 14,000 employed, independent, and academic physicians. They have more than 73,000 employees across more than 30 Texas counties.
Memorial Hermann and Baylor Scott & White issued a joint statement: “After months of thoughtful exploration, we have decided to discontinue talks of a merger between our two systems. Ultimately, we have concluded that as strong, successful organizations, we are capable of achieving our visions for the future without merging at this time.”
