Meijer Likes Big Boxes, And It Cannot Lie

Meijer, a Midwest retailer offering groceries and other items such as electronics and clothes, continues to move ahead with its big-box expansions, despite more national competitors (such as Wal-Mart and Target) downsizing to fit into urban footprints. Most recently, the Walker, MI-based company opened a 150,000-square-foot store in Flat Rock, MI; other Michigan locations include the Gateway Marketplace in Detroit, and one store in northwest Detroit, at Grand River Avenue and McNichols Road.

Aside from the big-box expansions, Meijer is also looking at shrinking its store size in some locations, with a planned smaller-format store in Grand Rapids, which could open as early as 2018. The smaller stores aren’t really that small, averaging approximately 100,000 square feet.
