Meijer Joins $60M Detroit MXU Development

Walker, MI-based Meijer Inc. plans to open its third store in Detroit, as part of East Jefferson Development Co. LLC’s $60-million mixed-use development on East Jefferson Avenue between Rivard and Riopelle streets. The 42,300-square-foot store is slated to open in fall 2019, and would add a grocery option in an underserved downtown area.

The grocery store is planned for the first floor, with 213 apartments on the second through fifth floors with a mix of studio, one- and two-bedroom units. The project on a 2.5-acre site is being developed by a joint-venture between Bloomfield Hills-based Lormax Stern Development Co. LLC, Dennis Archer Jr. and Marcel Burgler of Grand Rapids-based Prime Development.

The store could debut as a Bridge Street Market, Meijer’s new small-format concept since the site at 1475 E. Jefferson Ave. is significantly smaller than other Detroit-area Meijer supercenter locations.
