MDG Kicks Off Cook County Hospital Redevelopment

Ceremonial shovels were hoisted Tuesday for the renovation and redevelopment of Chicago’s massive Old Cook County Hospital campus. Murphy Development Group is leading the revamp of the block-long property on the city’s Near West Side, with a dual-branded Hyatt House/Hyatt Place hotel representing the first phase of the $1-billion mixed-use project.

“What everyone has said for years can’t be done will finally be successfully completed,” said MDG’s John T. Murphy. “Once we restore this historical building, we’ll not only have a beautiful structure once again, but we will also see explosive development in the Illinois Medical District.”

The 104-year-old Beaux Arts property at 1835 W. Harrison St. has been vacant since 2002. “This beautiful historic building has sat empty and unused for far too long,” said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. Although the project won’t receive any public funding, it’s in line for $24 million in tax credits.
