MD Awards $73M Contract to Rebuild Francis Scott Key Bridge

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) Board has approved a $73 million contract with Kiewit Infrastructure Co., a Nebraksa-based engineering and construction firm, to begin the first phase of replacing the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the Baltimore metropolitan area.

The contract, awarded through a Progressive Design-Build process, marks the beginning of a major infrastructure overhaul set to start in 2025. The MDTA selected Kiewit for the initial design and demolition work, the first step in the $1.7 billion project set for completion by 2028. The new bridge will be taller, with enhanced pier protection to prevent future ship collisions. It will maintain four lanes but will have wider shoulders to meet modern standards.

The new Key Bridge aims to restore a critical link in Baltimore’s transportation network, improve safety, and support the region’s economy. Upon successful completion of the first phase, Kiewit will have exclusive negotiating rights for the second phase, which includes the project’s final design/engineering and construction.
