Houston’s MD Anderson Investing $159M into Proton Therapy Center Expansion

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center will spend $159 million to expand its current Proton Therapy Center at 1840 Old Spanish Trail in Houston. The 160,000-square-foot expansion is expected to be completed by November 2023.

The expansion, led by Gilbane Building Co., will provide space for a total of eight radiation therapy machines that rotate 360 degrees around a patient, and provide targeted proton therapies. The redevelopment will also include an additional synchrotron, the accelerator that creates the proton beam, and re-designed patient rooms.

The current 73,500-square-foot facility opened in 2006. Since its opening, the center treated more than 9,300 patients from the United States and globally. “As more patients become eligible for proton therapy, we want to make sure that those who need access to protons have the opportunity to receive them,” said MD Anderson’s Peter Pisters.
