McDonald’s Going McGreen

It’s the year 2025, and McDonald’s is using 100% recyclable and renewable materials. Or so, that’s the hope. The world’s largest food chain with 37,000 locations worldwide has announced its intended goal to only use sustainable materials for its bags, wrappers, straws and cups by 2025. Currently, the chain is doing so with about half of its materials and only 10% of its materials are recyclable.

McDonald’s chief supply chain and sustainability officer Francesca DeBiase said customers’ number one request was to use less packaging and source more responsibly. Currently, its UK sites have stopped using foam packaging, and more than 1,000 of its locations have recycling bins for paper cups and plastic materials.

One challenge that the company says it faces is its massive global footprint, which means that different countries have different regulations and consumer habits. But, McDonald’s wants to “be a part of the solution.”
