Massachusetts Joins Regional Group on Reopening State Economies

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker said Tuesday the commonwealth had joined the group of six neighboring Northeastern states to develop a unified strategy for modifying stay-at-home orders and reopening economies. The governors of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware and Rhode Island announced the initiative on Monday.

“We share a lot of commerce, a lot of travel and a lot of people with the states that are around us,” Baker said at a news conference to unveil a field hospital on Cape Cod. “That’s why we’ll be working with our regional partners going forward.”

However, he added that although “we’ll learn from all the experts we can,” the commonwealth’s decisions would “always put the needs of the people of Massachusetts first.”

Further, “reversing course too soon” on the COVID-19 restrictions and opening up the commonwealth’s economy before it’s safe to do so “will only make matters worse,” Baker stated.
