Massachusetts General Hospital Plans $1B Expansion
Massachusetts General Hospital plans to expand its 1,000-bed medical center in downtown Boston with a more than $1-billion addition. The site between Government Center and the Longfellow Bridge is envisioned for two connected 12-story towers on Cambridge Street, with 450 single-bed rooms, a heart center, a cancer center, operating rooms, and other clinical areas.
The new addition proposed by Partners HealthCare is expected to be completed in 2026, and would be built on hospital-owned property. An existing Parkman Street parking garage would be demolished, and replaced with six levels of underground parking below the new building.
Construction is anticipated to commence next year, following a project review by several agencies including the Boston Planning & Development Agency and the state Department of Public Health.
