Massachusetts Biopharma Sees Capital Resurgence Even as Jobs Post First Annual Decline

Massachusetts’ biopharma industry saw employment shrink by 3.1% in 2025 to 113,503 jobs, the first annual decline in the two decades that industry association MassBio has tracked the sector. Conversely, MassBio’s 2026 Industry Snapshot found that venture capital, initial public offerings and M&A activity returned to the sector in force in the first half of 2026.

Massachusetts-headquartered biopharma companies raised $3.45 billion in venture capital in H1 2026, up 25% year over year and the strongest opening half since 2023. The tally represented 25% of all U.S. biopharma VC, second only to California (43.4%). No other state reached 6%.

Eight Massachusetts companies went public in the first half, matching the combined total of 2024 and 2025 and making up nearly two-thirds of all U.S. biotech IPOs. M&A value climbed sharply, with 11 Massachusetts companies acquired for a reported $18.0 billion, well above the $7.6 billion disclosed in the year-ago period.
