Marion County Courthouse Renovations to Begin Soon

Renovations will soon be underway on the historic Marion County Courthouse, in the East Texas city of Jefferson. The process of rehabbing the 37,500-square-foot courthouse at 102 W. Austin St. will take approximately 520 days, and will include a full interior and exterior restoration. Komatsu Architecture is the designer and Joe R. Jones Construction is the general contractor. Additionally, the Texas Historical commission will provide oversight, to preserve historical accuracy during the renovation process.

The project is being funded by a $4.7 million grant awarded by the Texas Historical Commission’s Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program. According to Marion County Judge Leward LaFleur, the county commissioners have been trying to get the grant for almost 20 years.

“Ninety percent of this project is restoration,” LaFleur told the Longview News-Journal. “It’s going to be restored according to historical record — the best historical record that we can gather.”
