Maricopa County Study Shows COVID-19 Infections More Widespread
A new antibody study by the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, Arizona State University and Mayo Clinic found that roughly 10.7% of county residents have detectable antibodies for COVID-19. That means roughly 470,000 residents in the county have likely been infected with the disease.
The new study indicates far more people have been infected with COVID-19 than have been tested. So far, countywide test results have produced about 177,000 cases being recorded. Maricopa County estimates that for every case reported through mid-September, three or four additional cases were not reported. The results also indicate that infections are occurring more often at the household level, rather than across individuals.
The county’s public health director, Marcy Flanagan, told Arizona Central, the study indicates that “sustained close contact” drives most infections. That points to separation among those in a household from someone who’s been diagnosed with COVID-19 and is isolating at home.
