Marcus Garvey Builds its Own Power Grid
April 14, 2017
Technology that could make a big difference is now under construction at Marcus Garvey Village, a mixed-income apartment community in Brooklyn’s Brownsville neighborhood.
“We’re proud to be designing and building the city’s first lithium-ion battery-based microgrid,” said Gregg Patterson, president and CEO of Demand Energy.
Marcus Garvey already has a 400-kilowatt system of solar panels that produces electricity during the day, when few residents are home to use it. The microgrid at Marcus Garvey will store the electricity until it is needed. It can also help keep the lights on during blackouts.
The technology could help make solar panels much more profitable, especially for large residential projects.
