1,843 Affordable Communities

Can’t find affordable housing? In the last three decades, developers have built or renovated 1,843 apartment complexes throughout New York City, with apartments priced to be affordable to low-income families. The developers are using cash from a federal program called the low-income housing tax credit.

Private developers built or renovated these communities, so they all look different. Many don’t look like government-subsidized housing. But the Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy at New York University has created a map of New York City showing all 1,843 properties.

A quick look at the map shows how New York’s housing agencies used the program to fight urban decay back when New York City suffered from hundreds of thousands of vacant and abandoned properties. Many of those empty buildings were fixed up through the program.
