Los Angeles Approves Tribune’s 56-Story DTLA Tower

Chicago-based Tribune Real Estate Holdings received an approval from Los Angeles to develop a 56-story mixed-use tower in DTLA on top of the Historic Broadway subway station now under construction. The proposed project would rise on a surface parking lot at 213 S. Spring St., 200-210 S. Broadway, and 232-238 W. 2nd St. and will include 680 units of multifamily and 10,000 square feet of ground-floor retail.

The 616-foot-tall glass-and-steel building was designed by Solomon Cordwell Buenz with an angular rooftop and setbacks to provide a series of terrace decks. The building will be wrapped with commercial uses and a new landscaped paseo will be added on the south side to provide a pedestrian connection between Broadway and Spring Street and serve as a buffer to a parking garage.

The site is part of the former Times Mirror Square complex that Tribune (now part of Nexstar Media Group, Inc.) retained after selling other parts to Vancouver, Canada-based Onni Group, which is developing its own high-rise residential complex on its site. Construction is expected to commence on Tribune’s tower once the new subway station is completed in 2022.
