Loop Business Metrics Show Improvement

The Chicago Loop Alliance’s July survey of member businesses shows progress form the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic and related shutdowns. 17 percent of survey respondents are open with all staff working onsite, while another 41% are using staggered work schedules to promote social distancing.

Along with conducting monthly surveys to measure the pandemic’s impact, the alliance also tracks pedestrian activity using counters by U.K.-based Springboard. For the week ending July 26, activity was up by 1% on State Street compared to the week prior, but down by 70% year over year.

“COVID-19 has had an unprecedented impact on businesses across the city, but the Loop is uniquely hurting because of its reliance on workers and visitors,” said Loop Alliance president and CEO Michael Edwards. “It is encouraging to see our numbers going up from the spring, but we have a long way to go. Our businesses need support.”
