Long Island City to Get 1.5M-SF for Innovation, Jobs and Housing

Two City-owned sites on the Long Island City waterfront will become 1.5 million square feet of industrial, commercial and residential space.

“We are creating a first of its kind work-live-play structure, with affordable housing, incubators, and space for cultural institutions,” said James Patchett, president and CEO of the New York City Economic Development Corp. (NYCEDC)

City officials selected developers TF Cornerstone, Greenpoint Manufacturing and Design Center, C4Q and BJH Advisors to build their plan for:

– 400,000 square feet of commercial space, including pre-built incubator spaces, an arts and technology accelerator, career training space and office space for start-ups in the tech, art, design and creative industries
– 100,000 square feet of light industrial, including 50,000 square feet of affordable workspace
– 1,000 new apartments, including 250 units of affordable housing

The plan also includes 25,000 square feet of space for artists, and a new school for 600 students.

It’s been a big week for Long Island City, which also saw the additional announcement of a new corporate headquarters.
