Lollapalooza Influx Provides Boost to South Side Airbnb Hosts

Airbnb hosts on Chicago’s South Side got a notable boost from Lollapalooza this past week, with an estimated 4,000 guests staying at homes in their neighborhoods. The tally was part of a record 19,000 Airbnb guests in town for the four-day music festival, the largest single-event surge of Airbnb guests the city has seen.

Locations in Bronzeville, Pilsen and Woodlawn, all a short distance from the festival’s Grant Park headquarters, were among the most popular, according to Airbnb. Hosts in these neighborhoods earned an estimated $465 apiece from Lollapalooza guests.

“We’re committed to catalyzing economic development on the South Side and neighborhoods throughout the city that traditionally have not benefited from tourism revenue,” Airbnb’s Will Burns told the Chicago Business Journal.

Overflow from downtown hotels and a lack of accommodations on the South Side were credited with the surge in Airbnb stays. The previous record was 15,000 for Lollapalooza 2017.
