Lockheed Martin Close to $9B F-35 Deal with Pentagon
Bethesda, MD-based Lockheed Martin is reportedly close to wrapping up negotiations with the U.S. Dept. of Defense on a nearly $9-billion contract for another 90 stealth fighter jets. The deal, involving the 10th batch of F-35 supersonic warplanes, is expected to be completed by the end of the month.
The F-35 fighter fleet is the Pentagon’s costliest arms program, and future plans include spending $391 billion developing and buying 2,443 more of the jets. For the first time, the cost per plane has been reduced to under $100 million, through supply chain efficiency efforts in the Fort Worth, TX production line.
That may help the prime contractor of the F-35 program curry favor with the new Trump administration, which wants to see lower costs for military equipment.
