LI’s Declining Birth Rate Means Future Worker Shortages
Long Island’s declining birth rate will make an impact in the form of worker shortages in the coming years, says a report from the Long Island Institute Research Association.
The follow-up to a 2018 report, the new study has implications for both the island’s workforce and consumer spending.
“Over the next 10 to 20 years, regional industries and institutions that either serve or depend on people between the ages of 20 and 39 (often the same industries or institutions) will likely feel the effects of the 0-19 population decline, as that smaller-sized population group grows older,” the report says.
On the bright side, the report notes that reverse commuting from New York City to Long Island is already on the rise. It’s likely to increase further as the Long Island Rail Road’s third track and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s East Side Access projects are completed.
